Calmest Dog Breeds
Looking for a chilled-out dog breed? Pet Insurance Australia takes a look at the top 10 calmest dog breeds around town.
“There is no doubt that certain breeds are calmer than others,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says. “However, it’s also important that all breeds can exhibit forms of hyperactivity and excitement depending on their socialization and training.”
Pet Insurance Australia is a big advocate of breed matching and encouraging owners to ignore the look of a breed and concentrate on personality.
“This basically means ensuring that you chose the right breed for your lifestyle,” Crighton says. “Some breeds require a huge amount of physical and mental simulation, while others do not.”
The key with choosing a breed is to research the history and what category these dogs fall into. Some will be working breeds, while other companion animals.
“Sadly, many dogs end up in a shelter situation purely due to the owners not understanding the breeds requirements,” Crighton says. “However, regardless of the breed, all dogs need to be trained and exercised adequately and not left for endless hours alone in a backyard.”
Some breeds will have traits and a long history into behavior such as;
- Taking chase of small animals
- Digging
- Barking
- Running
“This is why ignoring a breeds aesthetic quality and taking the time to really examine if the breed will suit your lifestyle is so important,” Crighton suggests. “Having a super charged energy breed will not suit a laid-back household. As too, inviting a traditionally known digging breed into a house with prized gardens.”
Many of these undesirable traits can be trained out of your chosen breed, however in many cases it’s a situation where you work with your dog rather than against.
“Many traditional digging breed owners will suggest teaching your pup where to ‘dig’ and where not to ‘dig’,” Crighton smiles. “This way everyone is kept happy, but it takes training and time.”
