Autumn Alert: Pet Owners Urged to Protect Pets from Toxic Mushrooms and Garden Hazards
Sydney, Australia – April 2025 – As autumn sets in across Australia, Pet Insurance Australia is cautioning pet owners about seasonal dangers that could pose serious health risks to their furry companions. The combination of damp conditions and increased gardening activities during this time can expose pets to toxic mushrooms and harmful garden products.
“Autumn is a beautiful season, but it brings hidden hazards for our pets,” says Nadia Crighton, spokesperson for Pet Insurance Australia. “Toxic mushrooms can sprout overnight, and common gardening products like certain mulches and fertilisers can be dangerous if ingested.”
Mushroom Dangers
Wild mushrooms thrive in moist, shaded areas and can be highly toxic to pets. Species such as the Amanita phalloides*, commonly known as the ‘death cap’, are particularly lethal. Symptoms of mushroom poisoning in pets can include vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, and in severe cases, liver failure. Immediate veterinary attention is crucial if ingestion is suspected.
Garden Products and Mulch
Many garden products contain substances that are harmful to pets. For instance, cocoa mulch contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Fertilisers and certain pesticides can also pose risks. Pet owners are advised to read product labels carefully and store all garden chemicals out of reach.
“Many accidental poisonings occur during this time of year,” Crighton says. “Pet owners must remember that some fertilizers smell particularly inviting for our canine friends.”
Preventative Measures
- Regularly inspect yards for mushroom growth and remove any found.
- Keep pets on a leash during walks to prevent them from ingesting unknown substances.
- Store all garden products securely and use pet-safe alternatives when available.
- Be vigilant for signs of poisoning and seek immediate veterinary care if symptoms appear.
“Awareness and proactive measures can significantly reduce the risk of accidental poisoning,” adds Crighton. “Our pets rely on us to keep them safe, especially during seasons when hazards are more prevalent.”
Additional Autumn Hazards for Pets in Australia:
1. Snail and Slug Bait
As gardens are prepped for winter planting, many households use slug and snail bait, which often contains metaldehyde—highly toxic to pets. Symptoms of poisoning include muscle tremors, seizures, vomiting, and, in severe cases, death.
“Metaldehyde poisoning is a common claim when it comes to toxicity in pets, running behind chocolate and bait,” Crighton warns. “With our highest claim being over $6,000 in 2024.”
2. Rodenticides (Rat and Mouse Bait)
Cooler weather can drive rodents indoors, leading many to use bait stations. If ingested by pets (either directly or through a poisoned rodent), these can cause internal bleeding, kidney failure, or death.
“Consider non-bait alternatives or ensure your baits are kept well away from pets and regularly check they haven’t moved.”
3. Fallen Fruit and Seeds
Some seasonal fruits (like apricots, apples, and peaches) may fall into yards. Their pits and seeds can pose a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockages.
4. Toads (Particularly in Queensland and Northern NSW)
Toad activity can remain high into early autumn in warmer regions. Cane toads secrete bufotoxins, which are dangerous—particularly to dogs that may bite or mouth them.
“Even during the cooler months, cane toads can pose a problem for some QLD residents,” Crighton says. “Staying vigilant, particularly for those pet owners possibly travelling to cane toad zones, is paramount.”
5. Cold Snaps and Hypothermia
Sudden drops in temperature—especially in southern and inland areas—can lead to exposure risks, particularly for puppies, senior pets, or short-haired breeds.
Ensure bedding is dry and insulated and consider coats for sensitive pets.
“With a little consideration and education, we can ensure Australian pets enter the cooler months safely.”
