Hot Weather Warning
With the temperatures set to soar, Pet Insurance Australia has some great tips for pet owners to keep the heat at bay and their pets safe.
“The temperatures are getting to extreme this week in many places across Australia,” Crighton says. “So, it’s really imperative that people consider their pets to prevent any sickness due to the heat.”
Young pups and older pets are most at risk, as too certain breeds and heavy coated cats and dogs.
“If you have a pet that does struggle in the heat, this week please be extra vigilant in regard to their comfort and safety,” Crighton says. “All dogs need ample shaded areas and extra water.”
TIPS
- Hose down concrete to keep it cool in shaded areas.
- Hose down under trees or any spot your dog tends to dig and lie in.
- Put extra water bowls around (stay clear of stainless steel bowls).
- Allow your pets access to a cool room or area.
- Freeze ice-cream containers for dogs.
- Walk early morning and late afternoon.
- DO NOT leave your pet in the car!
- Check heat of pavements with the back of your hand.
- Look for signs of heat-stress
HEATSTOKE (hyperthermia)
“Many pets do succumb to heatstroke so it’s important that all pet owners know the signs and seek veterinary help quickly,” Crighton warns. “Dogs and cats die very quickly from heatstroke unless it is treated immediately.”
If you suspect your animal is suffering from heatstroke or heat stress do not hesitate in seeking medical attention. Heatstroke can cause irreversible cell damage to animals that can quickly result in death.
- Pet distress
- Restlessness
- Excessive panting
- Large volumes of saliva
- Bright red or bluish/purple gums
“Use your intuition, and trust your inner-voice. If your animal does not seem right, seek help.”
