ACHOO! Allergy Prevention Tips for Spring
Sydney, [August 2024] — As spring approaches, Pet Insurance Australia urges pet owners to be vigilant about seasonal allergies that can affect their furry companions. With blooming flowers and increasing pollen levels, pets are more susceptible to allergic reactions, making it crucial for pet owners to understand prevention and treatment options.
“As springtime approaches, so does the increase in allergies, not just for humans but also our four-legged companions,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says. “We see an increase for claims around this time of year, so it’s important, particularly for new pet owners, to keep an eye out for the symptoms and seek veterinary advice quickly.”
Allergies in pets can manifest in various symptoms, including itchy skin, watery eyes, sneezing, and ear infections.
“These reactions tend to occur when pets come into contact with allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or certain foods,” Crighton says. “Spring can exacerbate these issues as airborne allergens become more prevalent.”
The Role of Omega Oils in Allergy Prevention
Recent studies have highlighted the benefits of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in managing and preventing pet allergies.
“Omega oils, found in supplements and certain types of fish, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the severity of allergic reactions. A recent 2024 study* on the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on canine atopic dermatitis found that supplementation of omega 3 and 6 did have a positive effect on allergies and symptoms.”
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to decrease the production of inflammatory compounds in the body, helping to alleviate allergy symptoms and improve overall skin health. Omega-6 fatty acids have been proven to create a barrier on the dermal layer of the skin, acting as a barrier against possible allergens coming into contact with your pet and causing issues*.
“However, when using a supplement in your pet’s diet to prevent allergies or decrease the allergic response, it’s important to start early so your pet has the omega fatty acids in their system before spring has sprung,” Crighton says. “Also, having solid advice from your veterinarian or veterinary dermatologist is imperative to ensure the best time to start and how much you should be supplementing your pet.”
However, when introducing any supplements, Pet Insurance Australia advises seeking advice from a veterinary nutritionist and a veterinary dermatologist.
“Omega fatty acid supplements can lead to weight gain and care needs to be taken to ensure the appropriate dosage,” Crighton warns.
When to Start Supplementation?
To maximise the benefits, pet owners should consider starting omega oil supplementation before the onset of allergy season.
“Ideally, begin administering these supplements about 4-6 weeks before the expected increase in allergens,” Crighton says. “And also ensure you are using high-quality omega fatty acids.”
This proactive approach allows the omega oils to build up in your pet’s system, offering enhanced protection against allergy symptoms.
“Early intervention can prevent secondary infections that may arise from constant itching and scratching, leading to painful and often difficult symptoms to control,” Crighton says. “Your vet can provide tailored advice on appropriate supplements and other preventive measures based on your pet’s specific needs.”
According to the Pet-Health Monitor, allergies affect pets of all ages. Skin infection and allergy claims run in the top three claimed conditions for all age groups.
“Allergies are the second most claimed condition in puppies under the age of one, and the top claimed condition for all other age groups.”
Highest Cost For Treatment Per Age Group For Skin Infection/Allergy;
- Puppies under one year of age – $8,41.00
- One to eight years of age – $20,622.00
- Dogs over eight years of age – $10,596.00
“We have seen that allergies are a big problem for pet owners at all stages of life,” Crighton says. “Seeking help during early symptoms can give owners a good understanding of their pet’s allergy and also help alleviate the chance of a secondary infection. Understanding that secondary infections tend to lead to an increase of veterinary care and cost.”
Symptoms of Allergies In Pets
Pet owners should be aware of the following symptoms that may indicate allergies:
- Excessive itching or scratching
- Red, inflamed skin
- Ear infections
- Watery eyes or nasal discharge
- Persistent coughing or sneezing
If any of these signs are observed, seeking veterinary advice promptly is essential.
As springtime brings higher allergen levels, Pet Insurance Australia emphasises the importance of proactive allergy management for pets.
“Understandably, allergies are not only hugely uncomfortable for your four-legged companion but can also cause complications that can cost thousands,” Crighton says.
