Do all vets accept PIA Pet Insurance?
This question is Googled often! But that’s not quite correct.
Vets are not insurers. They can’t “accept” – or decide to pay – claims on behalf of an insurer.
However, if the question is, “Will PIA Pet Insurance cover eligible vet bills from any licenced vet in Australia?”… the answer is a resounding… “Yes”!
Here’s how it works…
Traditional – ‘Pay Vet Bill then Claim’ Method:
Most pet insurance operates on a reimbursement basis. After visiting the vet, you pay for the treatment, submit a claim to your insurance provider, and receive reimbursement for eligible expenses, based on your policy.
Submit via e-Claims: the majority of vets in Australia can submit the claim on the policyholder’s behalf, via the vet’s administration software, directly to the insurer for assessment.
Submit via PIA Pet Portal: an easy claims submission tool on our website, containing the details of the policyholder’s cover – this is also the place to track your claim progress.
Submit via Mail: you can post your completed claim form to us, along with supporting vet invoices and clinical notes. This type of submission can take much longer than the digital options.
New GapOnly® Service
Pet Insurance Australia offers the GapOnly® platform for on-the-spot claims during vet consultations at participating clinics. Clients pay the gap (the difference between the vet’s invoice and the claim benefit under your policy) directly to the vet, avoiding the need for paperwork. To use GapOnly®, check if your chosen vet supports this service. [Link to GapOnly® vet locator]
Are There Any Restrictions on the Vet I Can Use With Pet Insurance?
At Pet Insurance Australia, visiting a qualified and registered veterinarian in Australia is essential for your claiming process. Reputable veterinary clinics readily showcase their credentials, ensuring dedication to pet health.
Holistic Veterinarian Considerations:
- Check if your policy covers treatment from a Holistic Veterinarian.
- Ensure the Holistic Veterinarian is licensed to practice in Australia and holds registration as a veterinarian.
Why Do I Need To Submit Vet History Notes For My First Claim?
Submission of vet history notes is essential for the initial claim to ensure there were no pre-existing signs or symptoms of the condition before your pet insurance policy commenced. For instance, if your pet were to experience a cruciate ligament issue, we verify its absence before the policy’s effective date.
Exemptions for Certain Claims:
- Non-insurance benefits like worming or flea treatments under the Major Medical policy do not require vet history notes for the first claim.
- For illness or accident claims, we may request the complete vet history.
Convenience for Future Claims:
- Your vet notes are stored on file at Pet Insurance Australia, streamlining future claims.
Adopted Pets Exception:
- Adopted pets are exempt from providing vet notes from previous owners. We only need vet history from when you took ownership.
What If I Switch Providers Will My Vet Notes Be Transferred?
If you’re transitioning your pet insurance to Pet Insurance Australia from another provider, it’s essential to gather your vet history notes for the initial claim. This will typically be requested from your new insurance provider at the time of your first claim. Vet notes do not automatically transfer between insurance providers. Understanding the status of your pet’s conditions with the current provider is crucial, as they may be regarded as pre-existing with the new insurer.
Pre-existing Conditions at Pet Insurance Australia:
- We distinguish between chronic and temporary pre-existing conditions.
- Temporary conditions, showing no signs for 18 months, are automatically dropped and become coverable if they reappear.
- Chronic pre-existing conditions, impacting your pet for life, are not covered. Examples include cruciate ligament issues, IVDD, Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Patella Luxation, Endocrine Disease, and others.
Waiting Periods and Waivers:
- A 30-day waiting period applies to illness condition claims from the commencement date of the first policy period.
- Claims for specified accidental injury can be made as soon as the policy is effective.*
- For Major Medical and Comprehensive plans, a 6-month waiting period exists for cruciate ligament (or related) conditions.
- Waiver of the waiting period is possible by having your pet examined, submitting the Cruciate Ligament Exam Form. The waiver is at the insurer’s discretion. Download the form here.
